Standing 842 meters (2,763 ft) above sea level, Pedra da Gavea is one of Rio’s most iconic natural landmarks and one of the largest seaside monoliths in the world. Its massive granite peak dominates the landscape and offers some of the most breathtaking views in Brazil.
The trail winds through the lush Atlantic Rainforest of Tijuca National Park, leading hikers along scenic paths surrounded by rich biodiversity, native wildlife, and stunning viewpoints. The ascent takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and provides the perfect combination of nature, adventure, and achievement.
Near the summit lies the famous Carrasqueira, a short 15-meter (49 ft) rock scramble that adds an exciting element to the hike. While this section requires attention and confidence, it is completely safe when accompanied by an experienced guide and does not require previous climbing experience.
Reaching the summit is an unforgettable reward. From the top, you’ll enjoy spectacular 360-degree panoramic views of Rio de Janeiro, including Tijuca Forest, Pedra Bonita, Christ the Redeemer, São Conrado Beach, Leblon, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca, the lagoons, and the dramatic coastline stretching into the horizon.
To make the adventure even more memorable, the descent includes an exciting rappelling experience on the Carrasqueira, offering a unique perspective of the mountain and an extra dose of adrenaline.

• Hike level: advanced (level 5 of 5)
• Rock climbing section: 1º+ BR / 5.2 US / 2º FR
• Trail length: 6km / 3,7 miles (total)
• Elevation gain: 800m / 2625ft
• Trail duration: 5 hours – 2:30 hours climb / 2:30hs descent
• Important: close to the top, there is a short rocky section where we use safety equipment, easy, quick, totally safe and perfect for beginners (no previous climbing experience required).
• Recommendations: wear light clothes and hiking shoes, bring a small backpack with water (3L, per person), snacks, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, cap or hat, sunglasses and cash for extras.
